Why I created this manual

A server with the right attitude and professional behaviour makes the customer feel welcome. A customer who feels welcome gives positive feedback and values the server, allowing this person to advance in their professionalism. Of course there’s another huge benefit to a happy customer – servers make way more in tips!

Inspired by Ibiza

Ibiza inspired me to write the Server’s Manual. After a few years living on the island I realised that there was a need for an essential and straightforward, affordable guide for people entering and working in the hospitality industry.

Every year so many people have to work in an industry they have no clue of. The best examples are students but also people who have lost their job for whatever reason and have to take a server job without knowing how to hold a tray, open a bottle of wine at a table or take an order.

Looking back on a long history working as a server, I had to learn it the hard way! Travelling for 12 years, I had my own bar in the Caribbean where I served a long list of nationalities from Germans to Americans.

During these years I was in charge of a restaurant in North America and saw what it took to make customers happy and become a successful waitress. I unwderstand that only a few follow the path of professional education in the hospitality industry, however with this manual I want to support everybody who really wants to learn or improve. I am confident that even if you’re not planning a lifetime career in service, you will still learn some vital tips.
